Speaking With Emotions
With all the hubbub about Bush's 911 ad, I thought I would look into the background of the "former Democrat" Mark McKinnon who runs Maverick Media, the outfit responsible for producing Bush's campaign ads. The responsibility for it lies at his feet, and I figured I might find his justification.
The link is here , under the Google cache. It's an article in Texas Monthly where he states his philosophy of political advertising.
McKinnon concludes two things: that viewers don't want to see something that looks like a political advertisement, but a documentary, a real slice of life. They also want a father figure, since their lives are so busy that they don't have time to sort through a candidate's positions.
Thus the footage of 911. "Hey, that will make people not change the channel! It will appeal to the emotions immediately! And we'll couple that with Bush acting all fatherly and stuff!"
Maybe there needs to be a commercial of Kerry talking to one of the families of 911, as they ask in anguish, "Why has Bush stonewalled the work of the 911 commission?" Let these families tell their emotional story...and have the camera focus in on John Kerry listening, patiently. No lead in graphics, no canned political speech, just Kerry at his best.
In the end, Kerry can say, "I'll get those answers that President Bush isn't giving you. You deserve the truth." Fade to black. Let's let Worst President Ever spend a few days answering that one. Michael Moore could shoot it for pocket change.
